History and Visitor Information 📜

The Grand Canyon's journey to becoming a national park began in the early 20th century, during a period when the appreciation for natural wonders was growing in the United States. Although the canyon had been recognized for its stunning beauty and geological significance for many years, it largely remained undeveloped and unprotected. The area's promotion as a scenic treasure began in earnest when President Theodore Roosevelt, an advocate extraordinaire for conservation, visited the canyon in 1903. Inspired by its grandeur, he encouraged the establishment of the Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908, which helped secure the area from potential exploitation and showcased its importance to American heritage.

The push for national park status gained momentum in the 1930s as local activists and conservationists rallied for more significant protections. This culminated in President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Grand Canyon National Park Act into law on February 26, 1919. The park encompassed over 1,200 square miles and offered visitors an unparalleled opportunity to experience its breathtaking vistas and rich river ecosystem. The establishment of Grand Canyon National Park marked a significant milestone in the American conservation movement, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural landscapes and opening the door to the expansion of America’s National Park system.

As night falls, the Grand Canyon transforms into a celestial playground, offering some of the darkest skies in the United States. This environment is perfect for stargazers eager to witness an awe-inspiring display of stars.

With its stunning landscapes, diverse activities, and opportunities for exploration, Grand Canyon National Park remains an essential destination for both nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Mule Rides

Taking a mule ride in the Grand Canyon offers a unique perspective on this natural wonder. Guided tours lead visitors along the canyon's trails, providing stunning views and insights into its geology and history. Rides typically last from a few hours to a full day, accommodating various skill levels. Reservations are highly recommended, as spots fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. Be sure to wear sturdy footwear and dress for changing weather conditions in the canyon.

Staying in Grand Canyon National Park

I stayed on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. There are lots of different accommodation options for budget travel to more luxurious rooms. There is a beautiful campground with restaurant, laundromat, general store, and gas station. Closer to the rim itself, the North Rim Canyon Lodge feature multiple restaurants, hotel-like accommodations, and beautiful log and stone cabins to rent.

Dining

While there are plenty of dining options available, I HIGHLY recommend the Canyon Lodge Dining Room. The food is spectacular, and they have vegetarian options that are fantastic.

Vegetable Penne Florentine - Florentine Alfredo, Penne Pasta, Roasted Tomato, Spinach & Broccolini.

Flourless Chocolate Cake with Caramel Sauce.

Water

One thing that caught me off guard with all of the National Parks on my trip - a lack of water bottles. Meaning you cannot walk into the general store in the park and buy a bottle of water. Sodas, juices, other beverages in plastic containers - they have them in spades, so it’s not as if they are trying to reduce plastic use. Bottled water is just a no-go at the main stores and restaurants within the national parks, so bring your own! (There is a trick - the gas stations within the parks are not run by the NPS and THEY have bottled water like a normal convenience store).
